Welsh Government health minister Mark Drakeford has reiterated the government’s commitment to offering people the choice to be cared for in Welsh and has promised to continue to improve the way the NHS in Wales meets the needs of Welsh speakers.
Measures will include:
- Making sure Welsh has equal parity with English and is not treated less favourably
- Strengthening the ability to provide Welsh language services for all patients
- Asking all staff to record their Welsh language skill level in order to have an accurate picture of the primary care sector’s language skills
- Ensure that language choice and the ‘active offer’ is understood in primary care by providing guidance to all sectors within the NHS about what is required
