Betsi Cadwaladr update: North Wales health board placed in special measures

A troubled health board will come under more direct Welsh government control after a report found “institutional abuse” at the Tawel Fan mental health unit at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Denbighshire, which closed in 2013.

Health Minister Mark Drakeford made the announcement today (June 8) that Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is being placed in special measures. He said the move to special measures reflected “serious and outstanding concerns” about the leadership at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board in north Wales.

Its chairman said the board would co-operate fully to improve matters.
