Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board is currently two consultations relevant to social care providers in North Wales.

The work has been undertaken by a group under the leadership of Susan Murphy, interim head of medicines management for BCUHB (central).

The final drafts of both documents (above) are part of a widespread consultation process involving health and social care providers and commissioners plus Regulatory bodies.

More about the consultations

1) A Concordat for a Code of Practice for the Management of Medicines in Health and Social Care settings.
The Concordat for a Code of Practice will apply to all BCUHB staff and all Local Authority Social Services staff and also to staff of commissioned services who provide services to others involving medicines. BCUHB and each of the local authorities within its boundary will specify that all providers of services involving medicines will be commissioned to provide standards of medicines management specified within the Code of Practice and the model procedures and safe models of practice for the handling of medicines.

2) Standards of Best Practice and Standard Operating Procedures for Medicines Management for all Care Settings for Adults and Children.
These standards of best practice and standard operating procedures have been developed by a Task and Finish Group jointly between Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board (BCUHB) and the six local authorities departments (Wrexham, Flintshire, Denbighshire, Conwy, Gwynedd and Ynys Mon). They establish best practice for the handling and control of medicines of individuals receiving provision of care from health and social care providers. They will apply where an individual is receiving care within North Wales and applies to
· all BCUHB staff
· all local authority staff
· and to those staff of commissioned services that provide services to others involving medicines
This includes domiciliary, residential, extra care housing, children’s homes, children in foster placement and care homes (local authority run and independent sector) and day services. They have been developed with support from Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW), Domiciliary Care Forum and Care Forum Wales.
BCUHB and each of the local authorities within its boundary will specify that all providers of services involving medicines will be commissioned to provide standards of medicines management specified with the Code of Practice and the model standard operating procedures.
