A citizens’ jury is to be brought together on October 1 in Cwmbran,
Torfaen, to discuss how the media affects relations between older people and
younger members of society.
The event is one of a number of planned to take place across Wales to mark the UK’s Older People’s Day. October 1
is also the United Nations’ Day For Older People.
The jury, which will meet at County Hall in Cwmbran, will hear evidence
about how older people are portrayed in the media and have the chance to cross-examine
witnesses about whether this damages the way younger people perceive them.
The opening address at the event, which starts at 10am, will be given by
the Welsh Assembly Government’s deputy minister for social services, Gwenda
Thomas.
The jury will weigh up the evidence and come up with a recommendation
which will be put forward to the Welsh Assembly Government on how to improve
relations between young people and the older generation.
