Plas y Bryn, located in Rhos on Sea, North Wales, was built in 1840 by Liverpool sugar farmer William Bostock. Originally used as a summer house for the family, it was converted into a convalescence home for the poor from Liverpool following Bostock’s marriage to Mary Bamber. During the Second World War, the charity ‘Saturday Fund’ also used the home to provide convalescence for soldiers returning from service.
In the 1950s, the property was sold to Dr. Braid, who registered it with the Local Health Board as a care home accommodating up to 53 patients until 1989. The home was later refurbished, renamed Plas y Bryn, and reopened in its present capacity.
Plas y Bryn has since operated as a home exclusively for people with mental disorders who have traditionally challenged mainstream services. It provides mental health nursing care to individuals whose conditions affect their ability to live independently. The home is registered with the Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) as a care home providing nursing care for up to 18 people with functional mental health problems, dementia, or mental infirmity. The conditions supported can affect people of all ages; therefore, the home caters to adults both under and over 65 years of age. Services for younger adults comply with the National Minimum Standards for Care Homes for Younger Adults, while older residents (65 plus) receive care that meets the required standards for care homes for older people.
Plas y Bryn offers nursing services to men and women, including survivors who experience mental ill health or neurodiverse conditions affecting mental wellness. Admissions are typically made via referral from Primary or Secondary Mental Health Services and/or the Local Authority’s Social Services Department (Mental Wellness Teams).
