Our aim is to provide supported accommodation to people suffering with severe and enduring mental health problems, tailored to their individual needs. We believe that people retain abilities and benefit from being encouraged to be as independent as they are able, but many with on-going support.
In order to achieve this balance between support and independence
we provide:
• A 24 hour on-call system for security and emergencies
• A support worker between 9 am and 5 pm Mondays to Fridays
• Breakfast, buffet lunch and evening meal 7 days a week and/or assistance with cooking.
• Assistance with contacting family doctors, social workers, community psychiatric nurses and voluntary bodies and liaison with them.
• Assistance to develop interests and to socialise whilst recognising that the individual may need to move at his own pace and has the right to refuse.
• Encouragement and advice with personal hygiene, maintaining the cleanliness of the individuals own room and encouragement to assist with their own laundry in accordance with the individuals capacity.
• Assistance and advice with managing money.
• Limits to behaviour that are negotiated and take into account the individuals problems but which are adhered to firmly, particularly if the behaviour impacts upon other residents and/or staff.
• Support and advice in conjunction with other agencies (social services or community nurses for example) to help the individual to avoid exploitation whilst recognising that the individual usually has the right to choose whether or not to accept this advice.
• Support in maintaining relationships with family and liaison with family.
• Support in coming to terms with severe and enduring mental health problems.
• Support with coming to terms with prejudice.
To sum up, we attempt to strike a balance between providing support on the one hand and encouraging independence on the other. As the point of balance varies from person to person this requires flexibility and negotiation. We believe that progress is best made by accepting each individuals abilities and seeking to develop from there.
