We have a large, spacious,5 bedroomed,executive-style detached house in Newcastle Emlyn. Three of the five bedrooms are en-suite, the ground-floor room is wheel-chair friendly.We also have large, colourful grounds. Our clients are adults from 18-65 with a range of learning disabilities. However, we do not like labels and say that our clients are PEOPLE with learning disabilities not people with LEARNING DISABILITIES.
Our philosophy is that our service-users live as normal a life as it is possible for them to do: our staff are all visitors and always treat the house and its residents with the respect that goes with that: they are there to support our clients not to do everything for them. All of us, including management,work as a team.Clients are encouraged to take as many decisions about all aspects of their lives as they can.
We also have a farm where the clients can come and help look after the animals if they choose to and where they can also go for classes in literacy, numeracy and a range of other skills. We hope soon to open our day-care services to non-residents and also envisage opening supported living accommodation and domiciliary-care. Our service-users have a very busy social life, visiting pubs, clubs, cinemas, restaurants etc. as well as going shopping both in our local town and further afield. Two of our clients attend N.V.Q. courses at local colleges and are doing very well: we hope, in time, that more will be able to do this. In short, they live like the rest of us and are given, in the words of our company motto ‘ a chance to grow’. In return,they give the same to our staff and the community in which we all live.
