Members encouraged to use new Care Council home learning resource – for new and existing staff

CFW members are being encouraged to use a new DVD from the Care Council for Wales which has been developed as an induction into the workplace for social care workers in Wales.

If carried out properly the Care Council says its Home from Home Learning Resource can help new workers understand the importance of person-centred practice and the values that underpin all work in social care right from the start.

Melanie Minty, CFW's policy officer, said, the resource would also be useful for existing social care staff too.

She said: "I would recommend members obtain a copy of the DVD to share with staff - it is a really helpful way to start discussions about what makes a home a home in the true sense of the word, not just for new starters but also for qualified staff.

"Some of our members had a sneak preview as Karen Wakelin showed the DVD at the recent Essential Updates in South Wales where it went down really well. It’s quite powerful, raising issues around the Welsh language, human contact, socialising, mealtimes and the importance of surroundings," she added.

The 'home from home DVD' has been developed for managers and those involved in supporting learning and delivering training to the social care workforce.

It aims to illustrate what good practice looks like and although it is set within a residential care home for older people, the underlying message would be the same for any person – adult, child or young person, accessing care and support in a residential care setting.

Home from Home is a film made up of a series of scenes that the Care Council commissioned from the professional arts organisation Re Live. They aim to show the impact of investing in the proper induction of new workers and the use of person centred approaches on both social care workers and people who use social care services.
