Deputy Minister pledges continued work to stop elder abuse

Following Health Minister Lesley Griffiths’ announced spot checks to ensure dignity in care, Deputy Minister for Children and Social Services Gwenda Thomas has also expressed a personal commitment to protecting older people.

She said:

“It is over 10 years since the Welsh Government published ‘In Safe Hands’. At the time this guidance was a ground-breaking policy that looked at developing and implementing local arrangements for protecting vulnerable adults, many of whom were elderly."

The publication by the Welsh Government in March of ‘Sustainable Social Services in Wales: A Framework for Action’ gave a very clear statement that it was a basic right for everyone to be free from exploitation, abuse and neglect regardless of age. It also set out the Welsh Government’s intentions for the future which include establishing a National Safeguarding Board for Adults and Children.
